HEWITT — The Bonham Middle School 7th Grade A Bulldog football team suffered their first setback of the season on Monday, dropping a tight 14-12 decision on the road against River Valley Middle School. Despite the tough defeat, the Bulldogs delivered high-impact plays on both sides of the ball in a contest that came down to the wire.

Wide receiver Justin Stonum earned Offensive Player of the Game honors after coming through as the focal point of the Bulldogs' passing attack. Stonum hauled in multiple big catches throughout the evening, repeatedly moving the chains and keeping key drives alive.

Quarterback Connor Brank capitalized on the offense's momentum by punching in a 7-yard rushing touchdown to put points on the board for Bonham.

On the defensive side, safety Caleb Matamoros turned in a standout performance to earn Defensive Player of the Game recognition. Matamoros was everywhere on the field, racking up multiple tackles and delivering the game's biggest defensive highlight—an interception return for a touchdown that kept the Bulldogs squarely in the fight.

With the loss, Bonham shifts to 2-1 on the season. The Bulldogs will aim to get back into the win column on October 5, when they head to Lake Belton High School to take on North Belton Middle School. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:15 p.m.
