It was all Bonham from the opening whistle on Tuesday evening as the Bonham Bulldogs 7th grade football team put on a clinic at Herman Anderson Field. Hosting crosstown rival Travis Science Academy, the Bulldogs unleashed an explosive, well-rounded attack to secure a resounding 47-6 victory in their season opener.
Bonham wasted no time setting the tone, overwhelming the Mustangs in all three phases of the game. Driven by a relentless ground attack and opportunistic aerial strikes, the Bulldogs built an insurmountable 34-0 cushion by halftime, leaving little doubt about the outcome before the second-half kickoff.
Jakayden Riley-Jones set the pace on offense, earning Offensive Player of the Game honors with a pair of hard-fought rushing touchdowns. Miael Teague matched the effort with two rushing touchdowns of his own, while Caleb Matamoros carved up the defense on the ground for another score.
The Bulldogs weren't just lethal on the ground; their passing attack produced fireworks as well. Conner Brank linked up with Dominic Valdez for a touchdown strike, and Matamoros later took to the air, finding Justin Stonum in the end zone for a second passing touchdown. Special teams added the finishing touches, with kicker Ben Barbosa splitting the uprights for two extra points and Matamoros converting a point-after attempt.
Defensively, Bonham was relentless, forcing turnover after turnover to keep the Mustangs pinned back. Defensive Player of the Game Joel Ramirez sparked the defensive line by recovering a fumble, with Cayne Lee and Silas Moten also pouncing on Mustang fumbles. In the secondary, Dominic Valdez and Conner Brank both made dynamic plays, each picking off a Travis Science Academy pass to cap off a dominant team defensive effort.
Following their impressive opening statement, the Bulldogs now turn their attention to their first road test. Bonham will travel to Tiger Field in Belton on Monday, September 14, to take on Belton Middle School. The B game is scheduled to kickoff at 5:00 PM, followed by the A game at 6:15 PM.
