TEMPLE, TX – In a nail-biter that kept fans on the edge of their seats until the final buzzer, the Bonham Bulldogs 7th Grade A basketball team secured a hard-fought 36-33 victory over Copperas Cove Junior High on Thursday evening at Bulldog Gym.
The Bulldogs relied on a balanced scoring attack and a gritty defensive performance to hold off a late surge from the visitors, improving their standing in front of a raucous home crowd.
Shamlin Leads the Charge
Derek Shamlin was the engine for the Bonham offense, turning in a team-high 13 points. Shamlin’s ability to find seams in the Cove defense proved to be the difference-maker in a game where every possession felt critical.
He was supported heavily by Audreas Lane, who dominated the paint to chip in 8 points. The Bulldogs also saw key contributions across the roster to keep the scoreboard moving:
Dawson McCauley: 5 points
Kevin Brown: 4 points
Ben Beal: 2 points
Parker Huffman: 2 points
Leonard Abilez: 2 points
Defensive Stand
While the offense found its rhythm, it was the Bulldogs' composure in the closing minutes that sealed the win. Leading by just three points in the final moments, Bonham’s defense tightened up, forcing Copperas Cove into difficult shots and securing the rebounds necessary to run out the clock.
Looking Ahead: Road Trip to North Belton
The Bulldogs won’t have long to celebrate their victory as they prepare to take their momentum on the road. Bonham will travel to face North Belton Middle School on Thursday, January 22.
Tip-off for the 7th Grade A game is scheduled for 5:30 pm.
